Sahajanand Swami, founder of the Swaminarayan faith, in traditional saffron attire

Guru Parampara

Sahajanand Swami

Lord Swaminarayan, Founder

1781–1830 · Born Ghanshyam Pande · Initiated name Sahajanand Swami · Born Chhapaiya, Uttar Pradesh

Life Work

  • Founded the Swaminarayan Sampradaya, initiating hundreds of paramhansas (renunciant monks)
  • Authored the Shikshapatri, a 212-verse code of conduct for followers
  • Worked against social practices including sati and infanticide in the communities he taught in
  • Established the Akshar-Purushottam philosophy that this lineage's later gurus carried forward

Sahajanand Swami is revered by followers as a manifestation of God (Purushottam) who came to reform religious and social practice in early 19th-century Gujarat. He left home at age 11 and traveled across India before settling in Gujarat, where he built a following that grew into the Swaminarayan Sampradaya. His teachings emphasized devotion (bhakti) paired with moral conduct (dharma), formalized in writings including the Shikshapatri. He established the practice of appointing a living spiritual successor (the Akshar) to guide the community after him — the principle this entire guru lineage is built on.

Guru Parampara

Gunatitanand Swami

Principal Disciple

1785–1867 · Born Mulji Sharma · Born Bhadra, Gujarat · Principal disciple of Sahajanand Swami

Life Work

  • Identified by Sahajanand Swami as the first Akshar — the living ideal devotee/spiritual guide for the community
  • Taught the Akshar-Purushottam Upasana (dual worship of the eternal abode Akshar together with Purushottam)
  • Served as spiritual head of Junagadh and later Gondal mandirs
  • Guided the community for over three decades after Sahajanand Swami's passing

Gunatitanand Swami is regarded as the first in the line of living Akshar gurus that this lineage traces. He served Sahajanand Swami directly and was recognized by him as the ideal devotee — a status this tradition holds each successive guru in this lineage carries. After Sahajanand Swami's passing in 1830, he continued teaching the Akshar-Purushottam philosophy for decades, shaping how it was understood and practiced by later generations of the Sampradaya.

Yogiji Maharaj continued the lineage from Shastriji Maharaj and is remembered for extending its reach considerably — both within India and, by the mid-20th century, to early followers abroad. In 1965 he initiated the young Prabhudas into sainthood as Hariprasad Swamiji, who would go on to found Haridham Sokhada / Yogi Divine Society in the early 1970s.
